Catamaran charter holidays: the best destinations in Italy, Croatia and Greece

Choosing a catamaran vacation means you get to combine the freedom of a yacht with the spaciousness and stability of a double hull vessel. As soon as you cast off, you’ll leave the crowds and stress on shore, as you spend carefree days with nothing between you and the sea. But how do you choose the right place for your catamaran cruise? It depends on your level of experience, and the type of adventure you find most appealing. So, let’s take a look at the top destinations for a sailing holiday in Italy, Croatia or Greece.

3 spectacular destinations for your catamaran charter

  • Italy: the Aeolian islands,  also known as the “seven sisters”, are an ideal archipelago for a sailing holiday. Although the islands are just a few miles apart, the landscapes show surprisingly dramatic changes in colour: plunge into clear, transparent water off Lipari along its white pumice coast, dive into emerald green off Panarea, and swim in cobalt blue above the black volcanic seabed off Stromboli. The two volcanoes that are still active make for some spectacular onshore excursions and by night, the incandescent lava flow is a sight to behold at least once in a lifetime.
  • Greece: the Ionian Islands archipelago – along the western coast of Greece – consists of seven larger islands and a multitude of smaller islands arranged in a fan shape off the coast. In this nautical paradise the wind fills your sails by day then it dies down by evening, allowing for tranquil berthing in warm bays that are ideal for snorkelling. The inland is green and mostly mountainous, with traditional Greek villages and cuisine.
  • Croatia: Dalmatia is ideal for a simple, relaxed holiday on board a catamaran. You can choose whether to cruise along the green, mountainous coastline, or explore the lunar landscape of the Kornati Islands. In just a few miles you can move from one mooring place to the next, discovering new bays as you go. Step ashore to enjoy white beaches and friendly low-key restaurants serving excellent fresh fish.

3 off-the-beaten-track routes to discover

  • Italy: the Pontine Islands are still relatively unknown to many sailors, despite being among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Perhaps it’s for the best: we can carry on sailing in peace among these six volcanic islands off the west coast of Lazio, and take shelter beneath the sheer cliffs plunging into the sea. Look up and you’ll see colourful Mediterranean dwellings and promontories carpeted with wildflowers; below are seabeds swarming with life and a few shipwrecks for diving enthusiasts too.
  • Greece: the Sporades Islands – the name literally means “scattered” – are a group of islands in the north-east Aegean, and among the least touristy in the Med. In this area, the Meltemi provides the right balance to allow unhurried, risk-free sailing on the wind. It’s a paradise for a sailing cruise in turquoise water among lush green islands, immersed in the Greek atmosphere, but far from the hordes of tourists.
  • Croatia: Dubrovnik is known for its magnificent, historic city walls, and the different architectural styles which have made it a UNESCO World Heritage site. But for sailing enthusiasts, the “pearl of the Adriatic” is also an ideal departure point for a cruise around the unspoilt Elaphiti Islands before heading towards Mljet, Korcula or Lastovo. This verdant archipelago offers sheltered bays with shallow water, perfect for a swim and a touch of snorkelling, before going back on board to gaze at the sunset.

3 destinations for those who like to feel the wind in their sails

  • Italy: northern Sardinia – between the Maddalena archipelago and the cliffs of Bonifacio (Corsica) – is one of the most spectacular coasts for anyone sailing in the Mediterranean. However, if you decide to navigate this area, remember that in summer the north-westerly Mistral wind blows strong here, and it could affect your route: when its light, you’re guaranteed fun and a good clip but if the wind rises you’re better off finding shelter on the protected side of one of the archipelago’s many bays or islands.
  • Croatia: Istria and the Kvarner Gulf are very popular for catamaran charters in the Adriatic: the Mediterranean scrub reaches the coastline, and steep hills plunge into crystal clear water. Always check where the wind is coming from: if the forecasts say Bora – a strong northerly wind – finding a safe berth can be tricky.  If you’re dropping anchor in a bay, try to get there in good time and reinforce your moorings, using shore lines if necessary. If you find a berth at a marina, you can take the opportunity to step ashore and wander around the fishing villages.
  • Greece: sailing around the Cyclades means getting acquainted with the Meltemi, a warm, dry wind that blows across the Aegean sea, especially in summer time. It blows from the north east and can prove challenging even for experienced sailors: it’s an excellent training ground if you want to build up your experience and sail many miles, but be careful because it can rise dramatically without warning, particularly close to the coast: the ‘Foehn effect’.
