Tremiti Islands | History and Culture

The Tremiti Archipelago, the only one in the Adriatic apart from the Venice Lagoon, is located in a marine area that over the centuries has been a crossroads of peoples and culture and where myth merges with history.
The toponym already refers to mythology: Tremiti descends from Trimerus, i.e. Diomedes, the Achaean hero of the iliac enterprises who left his homeland on his return from Troy to arrive on these shores and perhaps be buried in San Domino, not before having spread the Greek culture on the coasts of the Adriatic. For this reason, the islands were called Diomedee and even today the same name denotes seabirds similar to gulls that nest on the steep cliffs overlooking the sea, visible from a suggestive panoramic point of the main island. According to a tradition, it was Venus who transformed the hero's companions into birds to guard the tomb of their king.
The second most important island, San Nicola, stands out on the surface of the sea with its rocky mass crowned by the monastery of Santa Maria del Mare. A place that is more than suggestive and rich in history: the Benedictine monks of Montecassino decided in 1045 to build a monastery of their own order here in gratitude to some hermits who had settled here since the fourth century. One of them in a mystical crisis had the vision of the Virgin Mary, in homage of which he built a small oratory in the place where the church stands today. The entire building was then fortified in the Angevin age, in the forms that we can see today. Later the monastery was entrusted to the Cistercians, who led it for several centuries, until its suppression in the post-unification period. Since then the building became a penal colony and during Fascism, a place of confinement for opponents to the regime. Today one of the squares in the center of San Domino is dedicated to Sandro Pertini: the unforgettable President of the Republic and partisan was one of the guests confined to the monastery.
During the Giolitti era, many Libyans were deported to the two major islands, to relaunch production and repopulate the area, who knows if today the inhabitants have North African descent. Even in the 1980s, during the diplomatic crisis between our country and Libya, Gaddafi himself provocatively claimed the islands as Libyans.
Another character who binds his name to the Tremiti is Lucio Dalla: the brilliant musician was fascinated by these places where he stayed for long periods in his villa overlooking the sea. He also dedicated the song Luna Matana, inspired by the name of the Cala where he resided. During the year, the initiatives to remember and celebrate the Bolognese singer-songwriter are renewed.
The month with the most events is August, although generally all summer months offer shows, shows, DJ sets and cultural exhibitions. Do not miss the feast of the patron saint, Santa Maria Assunta which is celebrated on August 15th, for Ferragosto: the whole town celebrates and even the sea becomes the protagonist with a suggestive procession of boats.

Rent a boat on the Tremiti Islands

Although the Tremiti Islands can also be reached by ferry from Termoli, a rental boat from our operators allows you to visit the various islands and explore their coasts in detail. The type of boat to rent in the Tremiti Islands is varied and depends on the needs and length of the holiday: sailboat, motoryacht (motor boat or motorboat), catamaran, dinghy. For example, by sailboat you can visit the major islands of San Domino and San Nicola, go around Capraia and then travel north-east to Pianosa after 12 miles which, being an Integral Marine Reserve, can only be seen at a distance of 500 meters. A sailing holiday is suitable for a long weekend or preferably for the whole week By motor boat you can do the same excursions, remembering that there are two tourist marinas on the two main islands. To stop in the suggestive coves and inlets of San Domino there are no landings, but you can anchor in the harbor obviously respecting the safety measures. If you have little time and want to enjoy the beauty of the Tremiti Islands, why not take advantage of a day-charter? In a day of sailing with a skipper, you will reach the islands from Rhodes, Vieste or Marina Sveva, returning in the evening to the mainland. Another option is the dinghy, agile and easy to drive even without a boat license, which you can rent for one or two days.
